Casey D’Mello
Men’s Soccer Team Canada 2015
World University Games (FISU) in Gwangju, South Korea

Let me take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Casey D’Mello, a recent University graduate from York University with a B.A in Kinesiology and Health Sciences. I grew up playing soccer in Mississauga; ON and before long found that I had a natural ability in the sport. As years passed, I found myself playing on the provincial team representing Team Ontario and not long after, was selected to play for Toronto F.C Academy and progressed to the reserve team.

During University I was not just a student but a varsity athlete playing for York University, the top men’s team in the country and won CIS national championship in 2010 and captained the squad to another championship 2014. I currently play for Vaughn Azzurri in League One and also play in the GSL (Goan Soccer League) representing Aguada Waves F.C.

This coming summer I was selected to represent Team Canada University in the upcoming FISU games in Gwangju, South Korea. This Universiade international sporting event happens every 2 years and I was privileged enough to be selected as one of the 18 players that will compete in the men’s soccer competition.

Unfortunately much of the burden of the travel costs is put back onto us, the athlete, and therefore, your support by financially contributing to my participation, is helping me reach my goals and experience a once in a life time opportunity.

The Universiade is an international sporting and cultural festival, which is staged every two years in a different city. In regards to participation it is only second to the Olympic Games. The Summer Universiade consists of 10 compulsory sports, including soccer. The record figures are 10,622 participants in Shenzhen, China, in 2011 and 174 countries in Daegu, Korea, in 2003.

Embracing FISU’s motto of 'Excellence in Mind and Body', the Summer Universiade incorporates educational and cultural aspects into 12 days of sports competitions, allowing university student-athletes from all over the world to celebrate with the host city in a true spirit of friendship and sportsmanship.

43 percent of the athletes who medal in the World University Games (FISU) also go on to medal at the Olympic games. It is a true honour for the athletes to be representing their communities, families, Universities and Country. More details on the games in Korea can be seen on the Gwangju website at:

Training camp for the soccer team begins at UBC in Vancouver on June 22, 2015, from there we will arrive in Gwangju, Korea on June 27. Our first competitive game is on July 2nd against the host nation South Korea. We will return back to Canada on July 14, 2015.
